The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Ottawa Senators on Friday night at the PNC Arena in Raleigh in front of a sell-out crowd. Eric Staal tipped in the game's only goal off a wrist shot by Alexander Semin at the 15 minute mark of the first. The goal was only Carolina's third goal of the first period this season and marked the first time they lead heading into the first intermission.
The special teams came up big for the Hurricanes in the second period. On the power play, Ottawa came into the night at 30% on the season. Jaimie McBain was sent to the box for a double minor after he caught Chris Neil under the right eye with a high-stick. Over the next four minutes the Hurricane penalty kill was put to the test. None came up bigger than Dan Ellis. Ellis, on his second start of the season, turned away shot after shot.
The game marked the 34th time that Carolina has been involved in a 1-0 game and was the thirteenth career shut-out for goalie Dan Ellis. The Hurricanes head out on their longest stretch of the season away from home. The team's six game, twelve night road-trip starts on Saturday in Philadelphia.
